Sioux Falls kid headed for National Spelling Bee

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A 5th-grade student from Sioux Falls is now headed for the Spelling Bee Nationals after claiming the 2026 South Dakota State Spelling Bee earlier this month.

“I was like, okay, I passed the first round. Let’s see how I do in the second,” State Spelling Bee winner Oscar Quezada said.

Verdict pending in Farmer murder trial

In the 2025 State Spelling Bee, Oscar was eliminated in the first round when a baby cried and he lost his concentration. This year he says the incident was close to happening again.

“It was right before my turn when the baby made the sound. So I didn’t spell with the distraction. Like just a few minutes later and I might have been out,” Quezada said…
