Man who survived sailboat explosion near Port Townsend shares story from burn unit

GLEN COVE, Wash. — Two men are recovering at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after they survived a sailboat explosion and fire near Port Townsend on Sunday.

Walter Bastedo, 71, told KING 5 the explosion happened in “microseconds” as he was lighting the camp stove on the 50-foot wooden boat in Glen Cove.

“When I struck the lighter, it blew up. It caught me in the front and it caught my partner and it also burnt my dog,” he said. “It was extremely rapid, quick. I couldn’t react in time at all.”…
