Alabama mayor, city council clash over who picks police chief

The Center Point City Council voted to delay hiring a police chief due to disagreements over whether the mayor or council will make the final decision.

In 2024, Mayor Bobby Scott Jr. said he would make creating a local police department a priority for the city. Alabama law gives the mayor authority to choose the police chief, but some council members want input on the selection.

“By law right now, the mayor of almost every city in the state has that authority to appoint who they feel would be the best fit for their city,” Scott said during the council meeting on Thursday…
