Downtown Cary Park’s sophisticated design recently snagged a top honor, the American Architecture Award for 2025, making it one of just five parks nationwide to earn this distinction. This seven-acre urban retreat, crafted by Boston’s Machado Silvetti, won praise for its avant-garde melding of architecture and landscape, which seemingly transforms an urban plaza into a diversified natural sanctuary – what managing partner and principal Jeffry Burchard described to the Town of Cary’s news release as “a national recognition of the design achievements of Downtown Cary Park,” stressing the role of community backing and teamwork in forging notable public spaces.
Downtown Cary Park stood out amid over 1,500 competing architectural works in 27 disciplines, but beyond its innovative design, the park’s communal impact has been noteworthy with its first year drawing over 750,000 visitors and hosting more than 1,000 events, as Downtown Cary Park General Manager Joy Ennis illuminated, “This recognition reflects the vision and care that went into creating a park that truly belongs to the community,” Ennis emphasized the park’s role in uniting people and its significance to both locals and tourists in the Town of Cary’s news release.
Conceived over two decades, Downtown Cary Park is nestled in the town’s center and boasts a slate of amenities including the botanical gardens, facilities for food and drink like The Bark Bar, and areas for recreation such as Park Street Courts, not to forget the landmark Great Lawn Pavilion poised for prime performances.
