911 calls reveal details in wrong-way crash that closed I-71 for hours

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Columbus police helicopter video and 911 calls obtained by 10TV offer a closer look at the chain-reaction crashes on Interstate 71 on Friday morning that left one person dead and prompted an hourslong search for a wrong-way driver.

The incident began around 2 a.m. Friday on I-71 North near East Broad Street. Ohio Department of Transportation video shows a car traveling the wrong way on I-71 before colliding with a pickup truck and a semitruck.

“There was just a minivan driving on my side of the road, coming head on,” one caller told 911 dispatchers. “It looked like he had collided with several things already. He had… one rim was smoking like it had no tire left on it.”…
