Huntsville utility assistance program sees surge in calls as heating bills rise

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – A local utility assistance program has fielded a surge in calls this week as residents face higher heating bills.

Jennifer Cartwright, Project SHARE leader with the Salvation Army, said she has helped 100 families with their utility bills since Monday — but that has not covered all incoming calls. Cartwright said the program receives up to 300 calls about utility bill assistance per week.

Project SHARE is funded by customer contributions through Huntsville Utilities and assists low-income families, people with disabilities, and residents 62 years of age or older…
