Santiam Christian and Lebanon cheerleading celebrate new year with new state titles

EUGENE, Ore– It’s a sport that doesn’t get enough time in the spotlight, but one that is continuing to grow in the state of Oregon. Of course I’m talking about competitive cheerleading.

With another state championship tournament wrapped up and in the books from a week ago, programs that have been dominating on the mat for years and those rediscovering their footing are celebrating new state titles this week.

For Santiam Christian the 3A/2A/1A Small Traditional title from this season marks the second in a row for the program and the 16th 1st place trophy since the sport was officially recognized by the OSAA in 1984. For head coach Kathie Carley, who initially only took the lead position as temporary fill-in years ago, the sustained success the program has seen has been a testament to the work her girls have put into their craft…
