Faculty say they’re ready to strike at Lane Community College

After 10 months of unsuccessful contract negotiations, members of Lane Community College Education Association (LCCEA) voted by 92% to approve a strike, the union announced Feb. 17. To prepare for a faculty walkout at the Eugene campus, hundreds of members completed union-sponsored “strike schools” from Jan. 31 to Feb. 9.

The two sides were next set to meet for mediation Feb. 19.

The union — an affiliate of Oregon Education Association (OEA) — says it’s far apart from the administration on compensation, workload, and job security. Lane Community College has been increasing class sizes and cutting courses in spite of rising enrollment. If no agreement is reached, community college faculty could strike in April…
