In a recent CNN and Variety Town Hall special, actor Timothée Chalamet, 30, shared a rather… unforgettable anecdote from his early days on the set of the 2014 film Interstellar. Sitting down with his on-screen father from the movie, Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey, 56, Chalamet recounted a “coming of age” moment that left a lasting impression.
The special, filmed in front of students at The University of Texas at Austin’s Moody College of Communication, saw the two A-listers discussing their careers and reminiscing about past experiences. While Chalamet spoke fondly of his last day on Interstellar, expressing sadness at leaving, the story quickly took an unexpected turn.
As the New York-bred actor prepared to depart, he discovered a “huge turd” in the toilet of his trailer’s bathroom. Feeling “disrespected” and joking, “I know I’m not the star on this movie,” Chalamet embarked on a mission to find the culprit.
His investigation began with the behind-the-scenes crew, but after their denials, Chalamet took his query straight to Interstellar filmmaker Christopher Nolan, 55. It was then that Nolan, according to Chalamet, “pointed” to McConaughey, who sported a “devilishly grin” – a clear giveaway.
Upon confronting McConaughey, Chalamet asked “why” he had committed the act. McConaughey’s response? “In Texas, it’s a coming of age.”
McConaughey, laughing at the memory, added that what he left for Chalamet was a “souvenir.” The story elicited chuckles from both McConaughey and the student audience, proving that even Hollywood’s biggest stars have some truly bizarre tales from their early careers.
