Man Said He Shot Mom, Poured Gas On Her, But It Was A Swatting Hoax, Cops In Garfield Say

Just before 4:20 p.m., the Bergen County Communications Center received a call from an individual claiming he was inside a home on Sampson Street, armed with a gun, and had just killed his mother, Garfield Police Capt. Mario Pozo said. The caller further alleged he had shot his father, poured gasoline on their bodies, and threatened to shoot any responding officers, Pozo said.

Garfield officers immediately responded and established a perimeter around the residence, shutting down roads in the area. An emergency notification was issued through the borough’s Rave Alert system advising nearby residents to remain inside their homes while officers investigated.

During the investigation, officers successfully made contact with the residents associated with the home, who confirmed they were not at the house at the time of the call, police said. Officers, assisted by two members of the Bergen County Regional SWAT Team, conducted a careful entry and search of the residence, confirming it was vacant, Pozo said…
