Knoxville airport McGhee Tyson gets $22.5M boost for more parking

The Tennessee transportation department has given Knoxville’s airport a $22.5 million boost for its new parking garage.

McGhee Tyson Airport, just a few miles southwest of Knoxville in Alcoa, was awarded the grant by the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s aeronautics division to help complete what’s by far the most expensive construction project in the airport’s nearly 100-year history.

The project kicked off in 2023 with a $185 million budget and a visual concept for a garage that resembles the Great Smoky Mountains, the country’s most visited national park and a major tourism draw for East Tennessee. Construction is slated to wrap in summer 2027…
