State mandate drives Marietta’s ICE agreement, officials say

The Marietta Police Department has signed an agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, allowing police to function as immigration officers, in order to comply with state law, a spokesperson said.

According to documents published by ICE, the agreement, known as a 287(g) Task Force model, went into effect on Jan. 7, and allows designated officers to perform limited ICE agent functions.

Those functions and duties include questioning people about their immigration status, making arrests and serving warrants related to immigration violations and issuing immigration detainers…
