Horry County judge denies new murder trial for Meagan Jackson; wrongful-death lawsuit reopened

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A woman serving a life sentence for killing the father of her four children in Horry County in 2020 had her request for a new trial denied on Thursday, the 15th Circuit Solicitor’s Office said.

A jury found Meagan Jackson guilty of murder in June, after a nearly weeklong trial in Horry County Circuit Court. Thursday’s ruling came after a hearing before Judge Benjamin H. Culbertson.

Jackson’s estranged husband, Gregory Rice, was reported missing by Jackson on Oct. 5, 2020. His body was found more than a month later, on Nov. 8, in the Little Pee Dee River near Pitts Landing off of Highway 378 at the Horry and Marion county line.

Meanwhile, Common Pleas Court Judge Alex Hyman this week granted a request by Rice’s family to reopen a 2021 wrongful-death lawsuit filed against Jackson and Christopher Dontell now that criminal charges against both have been resolved, according to online Horry County public records.
