Iowans face icy roads and multiple crashes after snowstorm

DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowans woke up to snow-covered roads, accumulating since around 6 p.m. Thursday, which led to a messy Friday morning commute.

At 5 a.m., I-235 was a “choose your lane” with snow plows still trying to scrape off the bottom layer of ice and sleet that fell before the snow started Thursday. By 5:30 a.m., almost all snow had fallen, with the Des Moines metro accumulating around 4-6 inches depending on the area.

The Des Moines Police Department reported that it responded to 34 crashes and 26 stalled/stuck vehicles in the early stages of the storm on Thursday. Police said that was only about 30% of the calls they responded to from that time until 6 a.m.

Conditions are improving throughout the morning with snow plows continually out on the roads. As a reminder, leave space between you and the plows, as well as between you and the car in front of you…
