Sonnesyn, Jager win Birkebeiner 50K race

Alayna Sonnesyn of Plymouth, Minnesota won her fifth American Birkebeiner 50-kilometer women’s cross-country skate-ski race between Cable and Hayward Saturday Feb. 21, while Luke Jager of Anchorage, Alaska, won the men’s 50K skate race.

It was the first Birkie win for Jager, a member of the U.S. Ski Team who skis for the University of Utah.

Saturday’s race was run in cloudy weather with temperatures in the teens to low 20s above zero. The hilly dourse, which runs primarily through the Bayfield County and Sawyer County Forests, is expertly groomed by the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation…
