Rescue teams in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Central California continue to search for a missing skier buried in a deadly avalanche that occurred Tuesday afternoon, 90 miles northeast of Sacramento. The families of the victims released details that helped medical staff verify the identities of those lost on Thursday.
Eight people perished in a February 17 avalanche near the California / Nevada border off Interstate 80 at the Castle Peak recreational site. Six of the victims were mothers and friends vacationing together, according to details shared by The Weather Channel.
One of the victims has been identified as a Boise, Idaho, woman. One skier remains missing following the disaster that struck just miles outside Lake Tahoe. The avalanche’s death toll is the largest in the state in decades.
