Former DoorDash driver who fatally shot 15-year-old in Charlotte accepts plea deal

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Charlotte man who previously confessed to shooting and killing a 15‑year‑old in Uptown has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge in court.

On Thursday, Feb. 19, Keshawn Tyree Boyd pleaded guilty to felony voluntary manslaughter in the death of Matthias Crockett, a 9th grader at West Charlotte High School.

Boyd had originally been charged with first‑degree murder. The plea agreement, outlined in Mecklenburg County court records, calls for Boyd to serve 48 to 70 months in prison. He will receive credit for 393 days already spent in jail, according to court records.

The case stems from a Jan. 23, 2025, shooting on West 8th Street. According to earlier court filings and 911 calls obtained by Queen City News, Boyd, who was working as a DoorDash driver, told detectives he used his 9mm pistol to shoot Crockett, who was spotted inside his car.

Police said the teen was unarmed. Witnesses reported seeing Boyd drop off a food order, walk back toward his car, and then open fire on Crockett. The teen died at the scene…
