Guilford County property values can be appealed, will also affect renters

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Many Guilford County homeowners are still processing a large change in their property tax after a property value reassessment skyrocketed the value of their home.

Tax Director Ben Chavis says there is an appeals process for this reason and he hopes people do file appeals by the May 15th deadline. Chavis explains the value comes from the data about the sale prices of comparable homes in the area and of the same size, but people can alert the county to the status of certain aspects of their home.

“We only have the opportunity to take a look at the exterior of the property. With 220,000 properties, we’re not able to go on the inside of every property, and probably property owners would not want us on the inside of their home. But obviously, if there’s some issues on the inside of their property, make us aware of that,” Chavis says.

While there’s no specific list of things that qualify for adjusting a home’s value, Chavis says the age of the roof, foundation issues and even outdated interiors are good things to bring up in an appeal…
