Deadly fire was Cumberland County’s first major test of new emergency radios

MIDDLESEX TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WHTM) — The fire itself was devastating.

Still, a fire on Trindle Road in Middlesex Township that killed a man Wednesday night was also the first chance for Cumberland County emergency responders to test a new $40 million emergency communication system, and “from a communication standpoint, everything worked as it should have,” said Bob Shively, the county’s director of public safety.

Dispatchers and agencies switched from the old system, in operation since 2000, to the new system at exactly 9 a.m. Tuesday morning; county commissioners made the first ceremonial transmissions…
