‘Heartbroken’: Families identify 6 Castle Peak avalanche victims

(FOX40.COM) — The families of six women who died in a fatal avalanche that claimed the lives of nine people are asking for “privacy and space” as they grieve the tragedy.

The six backcountry skiers were “passionate, skilled skiers” who lived in the Bay Area, Idaho and the Truckee-Tahoe region, according to a statement issued Thursday by a local communications firm.

“We have many unanswered questions, but here is what we know at this time: Eight close friends planned a professionally guided, two-night backcountry hut trip to Frog Lake Huts outside Truckee, California,” the families said in a statement. “The trip had been organized well in advance. They were experienced backcountry skiers who deeply respected the mountains.”…
