Jackson man sentenced for auto theft that led to chase

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A Jackson man was sentenced for auto theft following an incident that led to a high-speed chase.

Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens said JaWayne Carter, 32, was sentenced to serve 47 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC). He was found guilty in January 2026.

On October 10, 2022, Jackson police responded to Advance Installation Maintenance, LLC, in reference to a stolen vehicle. The victim reported the vehicle had been left unattended with keys in the ignition for a brief period. When he returned, the truck was missing and contacted police.

Forty-five minutes later, Jackson police observed a white Ford F-350 traveling at a high rate of speed on Livingston Road. It matched the description of the stolen vehicle.

When an officer tried to initiate a traffic stop, Owens said the driver did not stop and led officers on a chase. The chase ended near the intersection of Gordon and Derrick Streets, where the stolen truck crashed into a wooded area. The driver ran away from the scene and evaded arrest…
