Code Blue: City of St. Louis opens additional emergency shelters ahead of frigid temps

ST. LOUIS — Freezing temps prompted the city of St. Louis to issue a Code Blue Level 3 on Sunday morning, which means not only will it be offering a warm place to sleep for those in need, but there will also be transportation to get them there.

More than 450 additional emergency shelter beds will be available across the city Sunday night through Tuesday morning to offer a safe place away from extreme cold, the mayor’s office announced. This is on top of the 400 beds available year-round.

Code Blue Level 3 is activated when temperatures fall below 25 degrees. Tuesday’s low is expected to be 42 degrees, which will lift the city out of Level 3 status.

Shelter locations

The following shelters will be accepting walk-ups Sunday night through Tuesday morning. Each shelter will also provide meals and additional resources.

  • Peter & Paul Jugan Shelter (for single men and women) – 3225 N. Florissant Ave.
  • Biddle Housing Opportunities Center (for single men only) – 1212 N. 13th St.
  • Peter & Paul Sidney Shelter (single men and women) – 112 Sidney St.

Additional shelter locations, including those with space for families and those with pets, are available by appointment by dialing the United Way’s 211 helpline or by speaking with a coordinator at a transportation rally point (see below).

Transportation locations

During the city’s Code Blue Level 3 activation, people seeking transportation can get picked up between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the following rally points. These points have a warming bus or an indoor warming facility to help people in need.

  • Urban League Women’s Business Center – 4401 Natural Bridge Ave.
  • Centenary United Methodist Church – 1610 Olive St. (use the Pine Street entrance).
  • Loughborough Commons Parking Lot – 1020 Loughborough Ave. (between Schnucks and Lowe’s).

The Metro-Call-A-Ride shuttle has an outreach worker inside and would be another option for transportation to the shelters…
