One bald eagle found in Iowa dies by lead poisoning, two others receiving treatment

IOWA, USA — In the span of four hours, Iowa Bird Rehabilitation discovered three different bald eagles suffering from lead poisoning. Even just a little bit of lead can cause brain swelling and destroy their liver and kidneys.

Sunday afternoon, Iowa Bird Rehabilitation got word about a bald eagle that was acting strange near the Des Moines River.

“Cynthia, our volunteer, was on her way to Iowa Bird Rehab with the eagle, when I received a second call from Marion County DNR officer Eric,” director Jenni Boonjakuakul said. “He said he had an eagle that was sick or injured and that he was on his way to our location.”…
