2nd annual Autism and Special Needs Awareness Day

LATHAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The 2nd annual Autism and Special Needs Awareness Day brought families together Sunday afternoon. It’s also a fundraiser that supports the 518 Special Needs Social Group and future events.

About 40 people came out to Kingspin Bowling Alley for bowling, raffles, and a room full of support.

“I wanted to do this fundraiser and Awareness day because a lot of people with special needs in our communities are not really recognized. And I feel like we need more recognition, and like more awareness for people with special needs,” said Organizer and Direct Support Professional Andrew Paolano. He said that his group and events are open to all ages and abilities.

Adrianna Price was accompanied by her direct support professional Katy Mejia, and said that the event was a great way to build friendships. “This is a great, grand experience,” said Adrianna. “A lot of people in the community have come, people with or without autism connections. So it’s been great to raise awareness and just make everybody feel comfortable,” continued Katy.

For many, it was more than just a fundraiser — it was a chance to connect. “Oh, it’s pretty fun. Since I’m homeschooled, I don’t really meet a lot of people. So that’s kind of the reason that I’m here,” said Bruce Dooling…
