Kim Jong Un Reaffirmed as Leader of North Korea’s Workers’ Party

Pyongyang, North Korea – Kim Jong Un has been re-elected as general secretary of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, according to a recent announcement from the country’s state-run media. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Monday that the decision was formalized on February 22 during the party’s Ninth Congress.

KCNA’s statement lauded the move as a reflection of the “unanimous desire” of party members, the military, and the general public. Kim was praised as the “center of unity and leadership,” with the agency crediting him for strengthening the nation’s nuclear deterrence and driving both economic and military advancements.

The extensive statement highlighted North Korea’s achievements over the past five years, noting improvements in national defense capabilities and economic planning. It also reiterated Kim’s pivotal role in guiding the country’s “socialist construction.”

Kim, who assumed power in 2011, has held the title of general secretary of the Workers’ Party since 2021, a position previously held by his late father, Kim Jong Il.

Analysts from the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) suggest that the conclusion of the Ninth Party Congress could be a platform for North Korea to unveil new strategic weapons and showcase progress under its 2021-2025 military modernization plan. The AEI report indicates that Pyongyang may display advancements in intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched ballistic missiles, and hypersonic glide vehicles, as it seeks to enhance the survivability and accuracy of its nuclear capabilities.

AEI further assessed that Kim is likely to outline modernization objectives for the 2026-2030 period, potentially focusing on second-strike capabilities, quicker launch readiness, and more diverse delivery systems. Beyond military matters, the analysis suggests Kim may present the current five-year economic plan as a success, citing increased trade with Russia and China and initiatives under his “20×10 Regional Development Policy” aimed at reducing rural-urban disparities.
