Clerical error tied to Tyson exemption leaves Potter County facing $412K revenue shortfall

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — A clerical error involving a tax exemption for Tyson Foods has left Potter County facing a projected $412,000 deficit in the county’s budget, prompting county leaders to reassess their budget and prepare for possible financial adjustments next year.

The issue came to light after the Potter County Commissioners Court was notified that a Freeport exemption connected to Tyson Foods had been unintentionally removed from the certified tax roll.

Jeffrey Dagley, chief appraiser of the Potter-Randall Appraisal District, said the mistake occurred while staff was making ownership adjustments to an account.

“We had a clerical error on a Tyson business personal property account,” said Chief Appraiser of the Potter-Randall Appraisal District, Jeffrey Dagley. “At the time we were certifying our values, we changed the owner ID on this account in order to make the records better for the top 20 taxpayer report. When we did that, it cleared off the Freeport exemption, so it created an error of a little more than $69 million in taxable value.”…
