Winter safety reminder: fire prevention and home protection in Clinton

As Clinton has recently experienced freezing temperatures, ice accumulation and power outages from winter weather, the risk of residential fires increases during cold weather events. When homes rely on space heaters, generators, fireplaces, candles, and other alternative heating sources, fire danger rises; and preparation becomes more important than ever.

Working smoke alarms play a critical role in protecting families, especially during winter storms, when homes are sealed tightly for warmth and visibility can be limited. Every home should have smoke detectors installed on every level of the house, inside each bedroom and outside sleeping areas. Batteries should be tested regularly and replaced at least once a year, and entire smoke alarm units should be replaced every ten years.

While the Clinton Fire Department does not currently have free smoke alarms available for distribution, residents are encouraged to purchase smoke alarms if they do not already have them in their homes. The Fire Department does offer assistance with installing battery-operated smoke alarms for residents who need help, helping ensure alarms are placed correctly and function properly.
