ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A one and a half year old pup named Sasha is currently four weeks post-operation. On a path to a long and healthy life.
But before she could get here, Sasha’s path was shrouded with uncertainty. “So, Sasha, who we used to be known as Tondie, was a stray intake that came in,” explained Albuquerque Welfare Department Veterinarian Dr. Nicole Prodany.
After getting a physical exam done, the vet staff noticed that she had a grade five heart murmur. “I was able to literally compare her images to the book a bit and say, ‘Yes, I think this is what we’re dealing with,’” continued Dr. Prodany.
A congenital heart defect would mean Sasha’s life expectancy could be severely reduced if left untreated. Treatment would be costly and something the shelter would be unable to provide fully.
Dog found in Valencia County gets makeover
While staff worked to seek out services to help Sasha, Shawn Howry came in hoping to foster a dog and got more than he bargained for. “You know, when I first walked in, I’m fond of the shepherds. And she was kind of goofy and aloof, and felt that she’d fit right in with the family,” explained Howry.
Vet staff warned him that Sasha’s path would be uncertain, but his mind was made up. Howry said, “We’d take her out here a couple times, just kind of look at her and felt as though she was young enough that we could work with her and give her a really good home to live in and play in.”…
