Driver convicted of manslaughter in high-speed fatal Virginia Beach crash

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A Virginia Beach jury found a 27-year-old man guilty of involuntary manslaughter and other charges following a 2023 high-speed crash that killed two passengers.

Maxwell J. Schaefer, formerly of Tomball, Texas, was also convicted of possession of a Schedule I/II drug and reckless driving – endangerment.

Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney Colin D. Stolle announced the verdict on Feb. 23, 2026, following a three-day trial in Virginia Beach Circuit Court.
