‘I’d like to say that we were witnesses of history’: Townes family has served the Executive Mansion for nearly 50 years

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A local family has served at the Executive Mansion in Richmond for nearly half a century, taking care of the house and more importantly the families that have occupied it.

The Townes family jokingly calls it the family business. They have been a fixture at the mansion through the comings and goings of at least 12 governors.

“When I think about this job and anybody who comes through that door, their first impression of Virginia is going to be influenced by us,” said Martin Townes, Deputy Butler at the Executive Mansion. “So there’s a bit of a weight on your shoulder to not embarrass the state.”…
