Grocery stores are leaving Milwaukee at an alarming rate

Since 2021, nine grocery stores have closed across the city. Five were located on the north side. Using interviews with residents, owners and local elected officials, our neighborhood reporters set out to explain why existing food deserts keep growing.

Major retailers behind the closures sometimes offer little to no notice before shuttering stores and have not provided a rationale. Smaller, locally owned stores have cited other factors, including the cost of replacing aging equipment, problems with traffic, difficulty competing with corporate-backed stores on price, and theft.
