Proposed ordinance would add step to Milwaukee historic building demolition process

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – An ordinance proposal aims to add a new requirement for any plans to demolish a historic building in the City of Milwaukee.

That ordinance, authored by Fourth District Alderman Bob Bauman and being considered by the City’s Zoning, Neighborhoods, and Development Committee February 24, would “require historic building documentation before demolition as a condition of approving a certificate of appropriateness for designated or registered historic buildings, structures, or site features”. The ordinance would prohibit the issuance of a demolition permit until that documentation is submitted.

The documentation would need to include digital models of the historic building that capture “exterior elevations, volumetric relationships, spatial geometry, and significant architectural features” as a way to digitally archive the building. It does not change already existing demolition procedures or timelines…
