Three design firms vie to recast bronze from Charlottesville’s melted Robert E. Lee statue

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — Three design firms are vying to recast the two tons of bronze ingots rendered from melting Charlottesville’s Robert E. Lee statue, with competing proposals to be presented to the public in mid-March.

According to the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center (JSAAHC), the following three competing firms are slated to present their proposals to the public at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, at the center:

  • Model of Architecture Serving Society (MASS) Design Group
  • Hood Design Studio
  • PUSH Studio

Attendees can ask questions about their work during the presentation.

This effort is part of Swords Into Plowshares, a project launched after the 2021 removal of Charlottesville’s Confederate statues, which creates new public art in Charlottesville to “advance multiracial democracy.”…
