JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCSC) — Residents of Sol Legare, a small island off James Island, are working to establish a historic district to preserve the community’s culture and landmarks for future generations.
For people like Bill “Cubby” Wilder, who grew up there, the smell of the sea, the palm trees rattling and seeing the people he grew up with always takes him back. It’s a history he never wants to be forgotten.
Wilder still lives on the island, where he focuses on preservation efforts.
“I’m in the Wilder family with the Wilder clan, and I’m a fourth-generation Wilder from my great, great granddaddy, Harrison Wilder,” Wilder,” he says. “As we stand here, we’re on the holy grounds.”…
