My WAVY TV 10 Journey So Far

I’ve been working at WAVY as a Sports Intern for the past five weeks, and each week I’ve learned something new. If you told me last semester, never mind freshman year, that I would be working at WAVY, I’d be shocked. My grandma often watched WAVY growing up. With such a recognizable logo, I couldn’t help but stop and look at the TV. When I received the email that I got the internship, my first emotion was nervousness. I was unsure what this job would look like and feel like. At the same time, the feeling of being able to work in sports and get better at my craft was too good to pass up.

At the Intern Orientation, I could tell this was a good place to work and a great learning environment. That nervousness was still there, but I think a little bit of the fear subsided. My first official day in the sports department was a whirlwind. I got stuck in traffic, and once I stepped into the building, I had to get directions on how to get to the sports department. I had trouble getting logged into my computer, but once I did, I got to work on two Sportswrap stories. I settled in okay.

I had just taken an Intro to Media Writing class the semester before and fell back on the skills I learned. As I was writing, the words just flowed as I listened to and observed James Kattato and Brian Parsons and how they went about their work. After that, the routine had been set, and every day since, more responsibilities and learning opportunities have been added to my plate. Learning how to cut sound bites, clips for voiceovers, and how to navigate AP ENPS are the ones that stick out to me…
