‘Critically important’ Knoxville area program needs more volunteers to help seniors

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A local program that helps some of our most vulnerable neighbors is asking for help. For sixteen years it’s provided rides for Knox County seniors and people with disabilities. Now, the Knoxville Knox County Community Action Committee said its Volunteer Assisted Transportation (VAT) program needs more volunteers.

“It’s been really rewarding to meet these folks and to get to know them and to be able to provide the kind of help that you can see makes a difference right away,” said Mark Mason, a volunteer for the past four years.

“You’re making a difference in somebody’s life,” said VAT Program Manager Nancy Welch.

The CAC Volunteer Assisted Transportation Program has provided more than 77,000 trips since 2009, ensuring senior citizens and people with disabilities can get to doctor’s appointments, the grocery store, and other everyday essential places. These are trips many can’t make on their own, and without volunteers behind the wheel, simply wouldn’t happen…
