Clairemont High School proposes mascot change after nearly 70 years

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — After nearly seven decades as the Chieftains, Clairemont High School could soon adopt a new mascot.

If approved by the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education in a Tuesday afternoon meeting, the school would replace “Chieftains” with “Captains” beginning in the 2026-27 school year.

Clairemont High could have a new mascot name starting next school year

District leaders said the proposed change follows the passage of Assembly Bill 3074, a 2024 state law prohibiting the use of derogatory Native American terms as school names or mascots.
