Adel livestock barn destroyed by fire, 17 animals die

DALLAS COUNTY, Iowa — A barn in rural Adel was destroyed by fire Sunday afternoon, and more than a dozen animals perished in the flames.

Capt. Matt Ireland of the Adel Fire Department said two calls about the fire in the 20000 block of 280th Street came in around 1:41 p.m. One from the property owner and another from a passerby. A LifeFlight helicopter happened to be traveling in the area and spotted the fire as well, reaching out to dispatch about whether they were aware of it. Capt. Ireland said the helicopter circled the area until emergency responders arrived on scene.

Fire crews arrived about 10 minutes after the first call to find a livestock barn fully engulfed.

Crews from Adel, Dallas Center, and Redfield fire departments worked to put out the flames. Water had to be trucked in to the rural area from Adel.

Firefighters faced the challenge of strong winds, with 24 mph winds from the NW at the time of the fire. Capt. Ireland said crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to other buildings on the property…
