Police warn of grocery store parking lot scam targeting shoppers

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — Charleston Police are reporting an uptick in a new scam targeting people in grocery store parking lots.

Police say the suspects use pressure tactics to rush victims into acting quickly. Victims of the scam report that as they were leaving the grocery store, 4-5 people would crowd them asking for donations for a tragic event such as a funeral or medical emergency. Then they would refuse to take cash and ask people to tap their cards on card readers, sometimes taking thousands of dollars.
