Community to weigh in on Perry Elementary’s fate in upcoming poll

BELVIDERE, Ill. (WTVO) — The future of Perry Elementary School in Belvidere remains uncertain. The school board considered closing it two years ago but kept it open. Now, it’s back on the table.

The school is back up for discussion as the makeup of the board has changed. Dr. Cassandra Schug, Superintendent of Belvidere School District, said the district wants to take another look at the school.

Nexus has been reviewing the costs for the school. The proposed phase one investment is around $7 million and would cover various structural and safety improvements. Dr. Schug talked about the first phase of the project which focuses on modernizing the older building. “We’re looking at the classroom spaces, the ADA compliance, the elevators, the accessibility, the safer and more secure entrances,” Schug said. “That requires some additional movement and investment there as well.”…
