It’s no secret that Oklahoma is often overlooked as a destination for outdoor adventure. But what folks fail to realize we have some incredible natural wonders and hidden gems. We don’t mind, though, as we’d rather have parks like Beavers Bend State Park and the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge to ourselves. After all, they are always great destinations for a day trip.
Another underrated gem worth exploring is the Keystone Ancient Forest in Sand Springs. As one of the newest conservation areas in the state, not many people know about all the incredible things to do here. With overlooks, scenic trails, interesting rock formations, and more, this hidden gem state forest in Oklahoma is worth a day trip or, better yet, a weekend getaway.
Located just eight miles west of Tulsa, Sand Springs has everything we love about small towns in Oklahoma: great restaurants, friendly people, and tons of outdoor adventure. You may have been to the city to hike the trails at Keystone State Park, but did you know there is a forest just minutes away for you to explore?
That’s right, folks! Just five miles from the state park is Keystone Ancient Forest (KAF). With 1,300 acres of beautiful natural Oklahoma landscapes and cross-timber forests, KAF has plenty of adventure for the entire family. Unlike other parks and conservation areas, the forest is only open between Thursday and Sunday, so the scenic destination is excellent for a weekend day trip.
As the forest doesn’t see many visitors, the trails are less crowded, and if you’re like me who prefers hiking in solitude, this is the place for you. Don’t expect to find recreational areas inside KAF; it’s strictly a nature preserve where you can hike and appreciate its beauty. And there is so much here to love…
