This Milwaukee urban farmer grows fresh food in winter to fight food deserts

On a frigid January day when temperatures hovered around 20 degrees with a wind chill of minus 23, Grian Hollies-Maxwell tended to her farm.

Hollies-Maxwell, 55, pointed out the variety of root vegetables she planted in three of the six raised beds in her backyard.

A variety of peppers, from green and jalapenos to ghost peppers, were shielded from the extreme weather under a 20-foot by 30-foot hoop house on a lot Hollies-Maxwell owns next to her Sherman Park home…
