Ready for more sunlight in NM? Here’s when daylight saving time begins

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) — Temperatures are getting warmer, and days are feeling longer. That means daylight saving time is right around the corner. On Sunday, March 8, we’ll spring an hour forward. You may be wondering – what time will the sun start setting in Albuquerque?

Here’s what ‘Old Farmer’s Almanac’ predicts for spring 2026 in New Mexico

A calculator by NOAA has the answer to that question. Starting March 8, Albuquerque skies will begin setting at about 7:08 p.m. That’s a little over an hour later than the sunsets we’re seeing in late February.

Come early April, those sunset times will be even later in the day. Skies will dim at about 7:30 p.m. on April 1. That trend will continue, with the latest sunsets slated for about 8:30 p.m. in late June to early July. From there, we’ll slowly start to see earlier sunsets once again.

Not everyone is a fan of falling back and springing forward. In a poll taken last year, KRQE viewers overwhelmingly voted that they would rather daylight saving time be permanent. The main reason is due to how early the sun sets during the colder months.

In our neighboring state of Arizona, daylight saving time isn’t observed, with the exception of the Navajo Nation. The only other state that follows suit is Hawaii. Outside of those two states, daylight saving time is the norm across the U.S., although legislation proposing otherwise has sporadically cropped up over the years.

The Spring Equinox is slated for March 20 this year…
