GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – State and local leaders are paying tribute to Greenville native and civil rights icon the Rev. Jesse Jackson in his hometown.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation has dedicated a portion of Haynie Street as Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr. Street, one of several efforts by neighbors and leaders to preserve Jackson’s legacy.
Community ties run deep
Greenville City Councilman Ken Gibson said his mother, former County Councilwoman Lottie Gibson, was one of Jackson’s mentors and friends. She worked at Sterling High School while Jackson was a student there, and Gibson’s father was a major leader in the NAACP.
“He sets an example that you can come from here and change the world,” Gibson said. “And that’s what he did. I mean, he inspired people.”…
