GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office released a critical incident briefing that includes dashcam footage of the chase that ensued after an ambush that injured an officer.
On Sunday, Jan. 11, officials said Officer Giordano Alberto was sitting in his patrol car outside of the Greenville County Law Enforcement Center just before 2 a.m. when 42-year-old David William Lane drove up next to him and fired incendiary ammunition that sent sparks flying.
In the sheriff’s office’s critical incident briefing, Lane is seen fleeing from deputies in a 2019 silver Honda Civic after firing at the officer. At 3:13 a.m., Greenville County deputies followed Lane onto Huntington Road off of Roper Mountain Road. Lane fired two rounds at deputies, who did not return fire.
Dashcam video shows Lane continue to flee into a parking lot near Independence Boulevard and Ponders Road, where he opens fire again at deputies. One deputy returns fire before Lane again drives away and turns into a nearby parking lot. Once in the lot, Lane was forcibly stopped by deputies, and deputies opened fire on Lane.
Following the shooting, deputies said that the coroner pronounced Lane dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound that occurred around the time of the forcible stop.
Sheriff Hobart Lewis stated that after further investigation, it was ruled that the deputies who were involved were justified in using deadly force.
Prior complaints made against suspect
The sheriff’s office said it was familiar with Lane after receiving multiple complaints about him prior to the incident.
