Lansing proposes four-tier property tagging system with fines up to $500 a day

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – The city of Lansing is proposing changes to how it handles code violations for rental properties, including a new four-tier tagging system and fines of up to $500 a day for landlords who ignore the tags.

The proposal would eliminate the current pink warning tag and replace the existing system with four classifications: white, yellow, red, and black.

Under the proposed system, a white tag would indicate an unlicensed rental. A yellow tag would mean the property failed inspection but remains safe to occupy. A red tag would designate a property unfit for occupancy, requiring residents to vacate. A black tag would classify a property as dangerous and could lead to demolition…
