Coralville votes to remove automated license plate readers after threat of legal action

CORALVILLE, Iowa — The Coralville City Council voted Tuesday to end their contract with Flock Safety for the use of their automated license plate readers (ALPRs).

The vote comes after the city received a letter from the Iowa Attorney General’s Office threating legal action because city policy bans the use of the cameras for immigration enforcement. Iowa Code section 27A.4 says local entities cannot prohibit or discourage law enforcement from complying with federal immigration procedures. The city was given 30 days to amend their policy.

At Tuesday’s meeting, the 15-minute public comment period included several people who spoke out against the cameras. Before the meeting, the group Corridor Community Action Network had encouraged people to speak out against the cameras on social media…
