BCSD Board of Education votes to eliminate classified positions, affecting experienced school bus drivers

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Exasperated sighs and heated words were exchanged during the Bakersfield City School District Board meeting Tuesday as members discussed deleting several classified employee positions.

The Board was asked to vote on a resolution that would eliminate 21 classified positions for the following year. Included were eight lead school bus driver positions, according to the agenda.

BCSD has seven lead drivers with one vacant position. Deleting those positions would make the seven employees revert back to their previously held, lesser-paying position, such as a school bus driver or expanded duty driver, district officials said at the meeting.

The vote came nearly two hours after classified employees and teachers with BCSD spoke up and rallied against disparities in wage increases for the Board members versus school employees, including bus drivers and custodians…
