Final EPA cleanup of Pensacola superfund site to begin in July, but city short on funds

PENSACOLA, Fla. — Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves says the Environmental Protection Agency expects to start phase one of the final cleanup of the American Creosote Works site this summer.

Phase two of that final cleanup is still not funded, and they’re still short for phase one. Forty-million dollars in federal funds were originally allocated in 2021. But Reeves says inflation has bumped up the price.

There are millions more dollars that need to be allocated to continue this project. But Reeves says that won’t delay the final stage. He’s confident the city will be able to lobby for those funds…
