Warning about new banking app scam in Goleta

The Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office is warning residents about a new scam in the area. Scammers are asking people to download a banking app, often from a bank they don’t use, and deposit cash into an ATM using the mobile or tap feature. They may also claim that you need to move your money to “protect” it.

Officials remind everyone that banks and government agencies will never ask you to move money, deposit cash into someone else’s account, or share login details. If someone makes these requests, it is a scam. To stay safe, do not download apps at a stranger’s direction, never deposit or transfer money for someone, and do not share banking information or verification codes. If you believe you’ve been targeted, call the Scam Hotline at 805-568-2442
